This event is in the planning phase. The date has been set and volunteers are being sought.
RMSC is part of the Greenville County School System. On the second Saturday of each month, RMSC hosts a themed event open to the public. Prior events have included Star Wars, Harry Potter, Engineering Day, Insectomania and Baseball. The Automotive Technology Day event will include automotive related activities for area school children and showcase Greenville's automotive industry. Greenville is home to BMW Manufacturing, Michelin, Clemson University's ICAR center and many companies offering products and services to the automotive industry.
RMSC members attend free while non-members pay for admission per current RMSC fee schedule. Parking is always free. Bring the whole family to any Second Saturday event, attend a Planetarium show or take a look through their telescope at the observatory.
For October 9, 2010, the chemistry room has been reserved for Boy Scout volunteers who will be designing automotive based activities for the public. Some Scout Troops have signed-up, but others are needed. Cub Scouts and Webelos are equally welcome to volunteer. Ideally, we would like to have some pinewood derby cars and a track for area children to try out. In addition to having fun, we'd like the activities to include teaching basic scientific fundamentals related to cars. Activities can include meeting requirements for Scout specific pins, patches or merit badges, but the general public must be allowed to participate as well. Many of the activities required for the Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge would be ideal for this event. Please send me an e-mail if you're interested in signing-up your Troop or Pack to volunteer for this event.
A portion of the parking lot in front of the Hall of Natural Sciences is being reserved for displaying personally owned cars. If you have an exotic car, racecar or something unique you'd like to share with area children and their families, please send me an e-mail.
If you're an automotive enthusiast, Engineer, drive a racecar, work for an automotive company or supplier, please consider volunteering and putting together an activity or presentation to share with families in Greenville. This event is all about sharing what you do with local families here in the upstate.
There is an opportunity for a vendor wishing to sell event t-shirts. Only event t-shirts can be sold and you will need RMSC's approval for the design. The vendor will assume all risks in order quantities, but can keep all of the event t-shirt proceeds. At a minimum the event t-shirts need to display the RMSC logo, the Automotive Technology Day event name and the event date. Final details are still being worked out, but if you are interested in becoming this vendor, please send me an e-mail.
Although many Second Saturday events are geared for elementary school age kids, I am hopeful that middle and high school students will attend to learn more about Engineering, racecars and the automotive industry. An event like this may inspire some students to further their knowledge by working harder in school and applying themselves for an Engineering or technical college.
This article will be updated as further details become available.
Thank you,
Steven Cagle
